Toronto couple pleads not guilty to charges after dead toddler found in suitcase

The parents of a baby boy whose decomposing remains were found in a suitcase have pleaded not guilty to charges related to his death.

The couple, who four years ago admitted to abandoning their infant daughter, known as Baby Angelica, in a freezing Toronto stairwell, were declared fit to stand trial last month after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation in Jamaica.

Supt. Steve Brown of the Jamaica Constabulary Force says that following an appearance last Friday, they pleaded not guilty.

They were also offered bail on a $300,000 bond.

The couple was charged with failing to bury a body as well as concealing the death of the two-year-old after neighbours discovered the boy’s partially mummified remains in the couple’s home.

A pathology report suggested the toddler likely died from disease, asphyxiation or poisoning, but said it was difficult to determine the exact cause of death due to advanced decomposition.

The couple, who are not being identified to protect the identities of their other children, are due back in court April 18.
