AGO employees could strike in April

Almost 400 employees at the Art Gallery of Ontario could be on strike as of April 12.

OPSEU Local 535, the union representing the workers, claims gallery management is refusing to budge on key demands.

The union says its members are coming off a two-year wage freeze and looking for fair pay in these negotiations.

Management also took a two-year wage freeze, but it doesn’t compare, OPSEU President Warren “Smokey” Thomas said.

“Here’s the difference: Matthew Teitelbaum had a 293 per cent increase in his salary from 2006 to 2009.  Other managers had up to 30 per cent increases,” Thomas said in a statement.

“In other words, they made sure they padded their pockets before the freeze took effect.”

Thomas said the union is willing to negotiate before the April 12 deadline.
