Wet snow & ice pellets in store for the GTA on Friday night

Environment Canada’s special weather statement remains in effect for southern Ontario —including Toronto and parts of the GTA — warning of the potential for flurries, wet snow and ice pellets on Friday.

Later that evening, CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said that instead of the wet, slushy snow that was predicted earlier, the GTA will only see trace amounts of the white stuff.

About 1-2 centimetres will hit the city, Ramsahai said, and wet roads and low visibility will be an issue.

North of Toronto, there will be a lot of rain mixing in along with ice pellets at times and that could have an impact on evening rush-hour traffic. Drivers are being advised to exercise caution on the roads.

On Friday evening, the snow could be heavy, and visibility will be reduced due to winds around 25-40 km/h.  After 8 p.m., there will be a risk of freezing rain from Hamilton to Kitchener to London.

Temperatures reached a few degrees above the freezing mark in the afternoon, but then quickly dropped to near or below freezing.

According to Environment Canada, “a disturbance developing over the U.S. Midwest will track just south of Lake Erie” late Friday.

The precipitation will begin Friday afternoon near Lake Huron and reach eastern Lake Erie and western Lake Ontario towards the evening.
