Teen faces 4 charges after fatal crash on Mt. Pleasant

A 19-year-old Toronto man faces several charges after a fatal crash on Mt. Pleasant Road earlier this morning.

Oliver Karafa faces four criminal charges, including criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

He was arrested after the SUV he was driving slammed into a pole on Mt. Pleasant at Sheldrake Boulevard, near Eglinton Avenue, around 2:45 a.m., killing 24-year-old passenger, David Chiang.

The impact sheared the Range Rover in half.

“Police arrived on scene and did find the passenger in the motor vehicle to be dead upon arrival,” Const. Clinton Stibbe said.

“Speed and alcohol do appear to be factors in this collision.”

Karafa, who also faces a charge of being over the 80 mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood causing death, was supposed to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon. But his bailing hearing has been postponed until Wednesday. Authorities haven’t released any other details about the victim.

Mt. Pleasant had been closed north of Eglinton for several hours. The area reopened at 11:45 a.m.
