McGuinty pledges support for Citytv food drive

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty dropped by Breakfast Television on Thursday morning to pledge his support for the BT/CityNews Food Drive.

Viewers donated almost $8,000 and about 13,000 pounds of food to Daily Bread Food Bank at the event on Wednesday. Citytv also collected more than $500 in pennies in an initiative conceived when the federal government announced it would discontinue the coin.

“You guys have inspired us,” McGuinty said.

“Martin Luther King Jr. once said, ‘Life’s most urgent and persistent question is what are you doing for others?’ And this is just a very simple way to be able to say I’m doing a little bit for others.”

The premier said his government would hold its own drive at Queen’s Park on Thursday.

Daily Bread’s goal is to raise $300,000 and 300,000 pounds of food during the drive, which ends April 13. Liberty Mutual presented the charity with a $10,000 cheque on Thursday, but it is still well behind its goal.
