Police remove ‘Occupy’ protesters’ tents on University Ave.

Police removed a protesters’ encampment near the University courthouse on Thursday morning, nearly a week after a clash between officers and Occupy Toronto demonstrators that is being investigated by the province’s police watchdog.

Officers cleared out the tents and signs and handed out trespass notices at 361 University Ave. around 7:30 a.m. without incident. Crews wearing masks were brought in to dismantle the camp.

Police moved in to remove protesters in the same spot last Friday, which sparked the clash and demonstrations outside Toronto Police 52 Division on Friday night and Saturday.

The Special Investigations Unit is probing police actions during the scuffle with protesters on University Avenue Friday after 36-year-old Angela Turvey suffered a broken nose and orbital bone.

Turvey was one of four people arrested outside the University Avenue courthouse. She’s facing charges of obstructing a peace officer and assault with intent to resist arrest.
