Negotiations go beyond midnight deadline for York University faculty, assistants

Talks between York University and the union representing its contract faculty and assistants continued past a midnight labour deadline.

The 3,300-plus contract faculty, teaching assistants, and graduate and research assistants who belong to CUPE Local 3903 were in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday. The school could also legally lock them out.

The union said its members would decide on Thursday whether the school’s latest offer should go to a ratification vote.

Local 3903 tells CityNews the issues at the heart of the negotiation are limited job security for contract faculty, hiring practices and income disparity between research and teaching assistants.

On Sunday, York said it was optimistic the two sides would reach a deal with the help of a mediator, but in the event of a strike, exams taught by Local 3903 members would be cancelled.

The school’s last labour disruption was in 2008 when York cancelled classes and locked out TAs.
