Coroner’s inquest into Michael Eligon’s death announced

An inquest into the death of Michael Eligon will be held, the coroner’s office in Toronto announced Thursday.

Eligon, 29, who was clutching a pair of scissors in each hand, appeared agitated and was believed to have a mental disorder, was shot at three times by a Toronto police officer on Feb. 3 when he didn’t put down his weapons.

One of the bullets hit him in the right clavicle area at a distance of about eight to 10 feet. He was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Special Investigations Unit investigated and concluded last month that there were no reasonable grounds to charge the officer with a criminal offence, saying he was justified in using lethal force against Eligon.

The inquest, which is mandatory under the Coroners Act, will look at the events surrounding Eligon’s death and may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

An inquest date would be announced soon.
