Crews tried to salvage furniture and other belongings that ended up on Highway 401 after a moving truck caught fire in Whitby Thursday morning.
A moving truck hauling items from three households bound for Vancouver caught fire around 3:30 a.m. on the westbound lanes near Lakeridge Road.
Police had shut down that section of the highway. All lanes had reopened by 6 a.m. but the cleanup effort proved to be a visual distraction, causing backups on the highway for the morning rush.
Front-end loaders are usually used to clean debris off the highway but due to the nature of the problem, crews are removing the personal items off the road by hand.
The cause of the truck fire hasn’t yet been determined.
