Public meeting Friday on proposed Markham arena

Markham residents will get the chance to weigh in Friday on the town’s proposal to build a 20,000-seat arena capable of hosting NHL action.

The more than $300-million public-private project is called the Markham Sports, Entertainment and Cultural Centre and it could be built near Kennedy Road and Highway 407, near the Unionville GO station.

The venue could rival the Air Canada Centre for major events including concerts and hockey.

Friday’s public meeting happens at 1:30 p.m. at the Markham Civic Centre at 101 Town Centre Blvd.

The project could receive council approval as early as next Thursday.  Bauer Performance Sports Ltd. Chairman W. Graeme Roustan is a major player in the plan with his company GTA Sports and Entertainment. Developer The Remington Group is also involved.

The private partners are hoping the facility will open as early as 2014.

“Markham is recognized as Canada’s high tech capital and the most ethnically diverse community in Canada, making it an ideal location for this facility,” Roustan said in November 2011.
