Earth Day events planned across the GTA

Earth Day is Sunday and the GTA has several green events planned leading up to and on the big day.

City councillors, students and residents from Pickering to Oakville pitched in to plant trees, clean up their neighbourhoods and recycle electronic waste.

Earth Day, first celebrated on April 22, 1970, is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement.

Here are some highlights from events on Friday and over the weekend.

The Royal Ontario Museum is holding an Earth Day-themed social night complete with a green grass carpet, small wineries and a film screening. ROM, 100 Queen’s Park. Friday, 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. rom.on.ca

Mayor Rob Ford will join Coun. Frank Di Giorgio to pick up litter as part of the Mayor’s Community Clean-up Day in one of many such events around the GTA. Amesbury Park, Lawrence Avenue west of Keele Street. 11 a.m. toronto.ca

MPP Kevin Flynn and the mayors of Oakville and Burlington will meet up at the Bronte Creek Provincial Park campground for a tree-planting ceremony. Bronte Road and QEW. Sunday, 11 a.m. ontarioparks.ca

Dixie Outlet Mall is collecting e-waste —including computers, TVs, phones and MP3 players — so it can be properly disposed of and salvaged for educational purposes. ghgt.ca
