Picasso exhibit to open at AGO next Tuesday

A new Picasso exhibit will open at the Art Gallery of Ontario next Tuesday, showcasing nearly 150 works from the Spanish painter.

Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris will open May 1 and includes “The Matador,” a self-portrait painted three years before Picasso’s death and The Death of Casagemas, one of the first works he created in Paris in 1901.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for Canadian audiences to view major works by Picasso, drawn from the world’s most comprehensive collection of his artwork,” AGO director Matthew Teitelbaum said.

The pieces are touring the world while the Paris museum undergoes extensive renovations. The AGO is the only Canadian stop on the international tour.

“Presenting Picasso masterpieces to Canadian audiences is a major accolade for our country and the Province of Ontario,” said AGO board of trustees president Tony Gagliano.

“The AGO is most proud to host these artworks and honoured to provide the opportunity to experience one of the art world’s greatest masters.”

The exhibit runs until August 26.
