Ticketmaster offers settlement in class-action lawsuit

Ticketmaster Canada has offered a settlement against plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit alleging the company bought and resold its own tickets for profit.

The lawsuit, launched February 2009 in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta, claims Ticketmaster conspired to force would-be concert goers to purchase admissions to big shows from its more expensive subsidiary, TicketsNow.com.

Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General investigated, and the provincial government later passed a law to stop companies from selling and reselling the same tickets to the same concert or sporting event.

The Ticket Speculation Act was passed in December 2010, but is not aimed at Ticketmaster directly.

Ticketmaster said Tuesday that settlement benefits include changes in ticket resale practices and an automatic refund of $36, less certain deductions, to persons who purchased qualifying tickets on TicketsNow,

However, the company did not admit to liability or wrongdoing.

The first of the approval hearings will take place on June 29 in Ontario.
