Occupy protesters remain at downtown park

Dozens of Occupy protesters remain camped out at a downtown park after three people were arrested Tuesday night for putting up tents.

The demonstrators settled in Simcoe Park on Front Street, near John Street, for a 24-hour “reoccupation” following a series of May Day activities and protests, including a large rally at city hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Three people were arrested at the park around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and were charged with prohibited activity on premises for trying to put up tents. Police had said the protesters can be in the park past 12 a.m. Wednesday, but couldn’t put up tents or use sleeping bags.

The trio arrested was given tickets and released.

The activists wanted to focus their attention Wednesday on the Metro Toronto Convention Centre where Barrick Gold will hold its annual general meeting. The protesters planned to show up around 10 a.m.

They also plan to clean up and move out of Simcoe Park by 7 p.m. Wednesday. The protesters are expected to “occupy” other sites around the city, but organizers haven’t announced details.

The Occupy demonstrators blocked afternoon rush-hour traffic downtown as they marched from Nathan Phillips Square to Alexandra Park at Bathurst and Dundas.
