‘The Avengers’ set to dominate box office

Fans, some in costume, lined up to be among the first to see the film already on track to be the biggest blockbuster of the year.

One man said it was “probably the best movie ever made,” while another fan was impressed by the “nerdy quips” inserted in the film for true fans.

The Avengers opened in North America Friday and several fans who filed out of a midnight screening at the Scotiabank Theatre on Richmond Street gave the superhero flick a big thumbs-up.

The movie features some of Marvel Comics’ best-known characters, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

The film has already broken even. It cost $220 million to make and had already earned more than $260 million overseas. Box office watchers project it could earn between $150 million and $170 million in its North American opening weekend alone.
