Parts of Danforth Tech reopen to students, staff

Parts of Danforth Collegiate & Technical Institute have reopened after a fire late last month damaged much of the school.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) said it planned to have about 45 learning spaces for students beginning Monday, which is about 65 per cent of what it normally offers. The board also said only the north  and west entrances would be open and that breakfast and lunch programs wouldn’t be offered this week.

Other parts of the building will remain closed for at least three weeks and likely for the remainder of the school year because of the significant fire, smoke and water damage caused by the April 25 fire, which police deemed was arson. Fortunately, no students or teachers were injured in the fire that began in the school’s drama room that Wednesday morning.

The school board also said that some students will continue to use about 25 classroom spaces at Eastern Commerce Collegiate, which is about half a kilometre away from Danforth Tech. The TDSB will provide shuttle buses to move students between the schools.

Students with learning disabilities and their teachers will continue going to Eastdale Collegiate Institute for the rest of the school year. Shuttle buses would be provided.
