Canadian gets 10 years in Barrie man’s death in Dominican Republic: reports

A Canadian has been sentenced to 10 years in prison while his co-accused, an Algerian man, has been acquitted after a Barrie man was beaten to death in the Dominican Republic last year, according to multiple published reports.

Jordan Morrison, a 19-year-old resident of Barrie, Ont., was killed outside a resort nightclub in Punta Cana on Feb. 4, 2011.

Witnesses have said Morrison was attacked after he had come to the aid of a woman in a bar who was spit on.

Canadian citizen Dmytro Aref Yev was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but Algerian national Bouzid Redha was acquitted.

Yev told the jury he acted alone. He then pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Three other Canadian tourists were initially held in connection with the attack, but were released on bail after a judge decided they had no direct role in the fight.
