Poll ranks Pearson as both the worst & 2nd-best Canadian airport

Travellers have a love/hate relationship with airports, which is reflected in Pearson International’s rankings in a recent poll that lists YYZ as both the worst and one of the best airports in Canada.

For the second straight year Pearson International has been ranked the worst airport in Canada in a poll conducted by an online flight booking company. Slow security, bad service and disappointing food options were cited for the awful review.

The lack of love for Pearson has increased since FlightNetwork.com started collecting travellers’ airports opinions in 2010. In the latest poll, 36.6 per cent of respondents said Pearson was “the worst”, up from 27.6 per cent in 2010.

Of the 243 frequent flyers polled online, 57.2 per cent cited slow security, 53.5 per cent cited bad service and 49.8 per cent cited bad food options.

But here’s the strange part: the same study also lists Pearson as the second best airport in Canada. And outside of Canada, YYZ ranked as the sixth-best airport in the world, beating out Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Chicago’s O’Hare and others.

In Canada, Vancouver, or YVR, was ranked as the best airport. Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau, or YUL, airport was second.

For those who aren’t happy with the food options at Pearson, things are about to change for the better. Three high-profile Toronto chefs — Top Chef Canada host Mark McEwan, Origin’s Claudio Aprile and Guy Rubino of Ame — are opening three new restaurants in terminals 1 and 3 this year. New takeout counters and restaurants will pop up in 2013.
