Pedestrian dies following SUV crash in Scarborough

A pedestrian has died in hospital following a crash with an out-of-control SUV in Scarborough on Monday.

The 33-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at Sunnybrook hospital Tuesday.

Toronto Police are looking for witnesses.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. Monday on Steeles Avenue at Birchmount Road.  Police say the driver of a Ford Escape was heading east on Steeles when she mounted the curb and slammed into a bus shelter and a hydro pole.

The 51-year-old driver then hit the pedestrian, who was walking south on the west side of Birchmount.

The driver was apparently trying to avoid a car stopped at a red light, police said.

No charges have been laid.
