Brinks impersonator stole ‘large sum’ from Scarborough supermarket

Police are asking for the public’s help finding the so-called poser bandit, a man who impersonated a Brinks guard and stole a large amount of money during a pickup from a Scarborough supermarket three months ago.

Toronto Staff Insp. Mike Earl said the man arrived at Fu Yao supermarket on Feb. 18 dressed in a Brinks Canada uniform including a duty belt and firearm. He told the person he was there to pick up the day’s receipts and fled after being given the money.

Police wouldn’t say how much was stolen, only that it was “a large sum of money.”

The poser bandit is believed to have tried the same tactic but unsuccessfully on Dec. 31, 2011, at a Walmart on St. Clair Ave. W., Earl said.

In that incident, he attended the area where the money was to be picked up but the store manager challenged him for ID. He pretended to leave to get his identification and never returned.

“This individual has put a lot of planning in place he’s arriving just before the usual pickup the Brinks trucks would make and he’s fleeing with the cash on one occasion,” Earl said.

He believes that the individual may be a past employee of Brinks or has associated with a past employee.

Police have released a security video from that Walmart incident, hoping someone will recognize him. He is described as white, around 35 years old and is medium to heavy set.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
