Tornado touches down in Orono, near Oshawa

There was some wild weather east of the GTA Tuesday, as a confirmed tornado touched down in Orono, in the municipality of Clarington, near Oshawa.

Environment Canada says the tornado was an F0, the lowest on the Fujita scale. It touched down in a farmers field on Clarington Concession Road 6 and Andrews Road East in Orono.

Several area residents called the CityNews newsroom, sending in photos and video and reporting a funnel cloud in the area.

CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai says a weak cold front triggered thunderstorms in southeastern Ontario, extending from Ottawa to eastern Durham region.

“As one particular weak thunderstorm moved southward in Orono towards Lake Ontario, it encountered a breeze off the lake which was opposite to its motion, hence putting the spin into the cloud,” said Ramsahai.

“A funnel cloud formed, and became a tornado once it touched the ground.”

There have been no reports of injuries or major property damage from the storm as of yet.
