Brad Pitt discusses engagement, marriage, at Cannes

Considering Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been partners — but not married — for seven years, we would have to agree with Pitt’s assessment that it “made sense” for the two of them to finally get engaged last month.

Pitt, 48, shared this sentiment with reporters Tuesday during a Cannes Film Festival press conference for his new gangster drama Killing Them Softly. One thing he wouldn’t divulge to the media? When he and the mother of his children plan to get hitched.

“We actually, really and truly, have no date,” the actor responded when asked about the rumor that he and Jolie, 36, would walk down the aisle in August.

“[Getting engaged] is just something that made sense to us, and certainly date-wise, it’s just a rumor. We’re still hoping that we can figure out marriage equality in the States before that date.”

It does seem like the United States is closer than ever to allowing equal marriage rights for all, what with President Obama’s recent declaration that he supports same-sex marriage. But we appreciate Brangelina’s continued insistence that they shouldn’t get married until everyone can.

While Pitt was his usual dapper self making the press rounds in Cannes, he was missing one (very important) accessory: his family. Jolie and the couple’s six children — Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3 — didn’t make the trip this time.

“She’s actually not here right now. She’s prepping for a movie she starts very soon,” Pitt explained of his bride-to-be, who begins shooting Maleficent this summer.

Pitt, whose first and last film with Jolie was 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, won’t be teaming with Angie on Maleficent, but might he and the future Mrs. Pitt share the big-screen again someday?

“Yeah,” said Pitt. “We’d love to.”
