5 things to do this weekend: Doors Open, desiFest, and ping pong tournament

As our regular CityNews.ca series continues, we look at events happening in Toronto for a variety of ages and interests.

May 25-27, 2012

For Families: There’s no bad time to hit up desiFEST, a 12-hour celebration of all things South Asian. Take in concerts, shop artisans’ stalls, explore kids’ activities and of course, visit the food market at Yonge-Dundas Square. Saturday May 26. 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Free. desiFEST.ca

For Visitors:  Take a peek inside Toronto’s best buildings as nearly 150 normally closed centres open up to the public. The 13th annual Doors Open event celebrates buildings of architectural, cultural and historical significance. Citywide. May 26-27. Free. toronto.ca/doorsopen.

For Singles: Whether you’re new to cycling or a veteran road warrior, check out the Toronto Bicycling Network’s spring kick-off event – and meet like-minded enthusiasts.  Snacks, seminars and group rides begin at Etienne Brule Park, near Bloor and Jane streets.  Saturday May 26. 9 a.m.  Free.  tbn.ca

For Charity: Find your furriest friend and head to the beach as the Etobicoke Humane Society hosts a walk-a-thon. Leashes By The Lake will feature dog demonstrations, games, prizes and face painting for the kids. Amos Waites Park, 2445 Lake Shore Blvd. W., Mimico. May 27. 11 a.m. EtobicokeHumaneSociety.com

For Kicks: Grab a paddle and hit the tables – or grab a chair and watch – at the women’s only ping pong tournament at downtown ping pong club SPiN.  All proceeds from the round-robin tournament go to the Remix project, which helps underprivileged kids enter creative industries.  SPiN Toronto, 461 King St. W. Friday, May 25. 7 p.m. $10. spingalactic.com
