Deer caught near Lake Shore in west end

Police shut down a section of Lake Shore Boulevard West on Friday afternoon so officers could corral a deer running around by the Boulevard Club.

A deer was spotted near Church and Alexander streets Friday morning, and the one captured by the Lake Shore later in the day is believed to be the same animal.

Specialists from the Toronto Zoo were called in to help catch the deer, which was shot with a tranquilizer dart just after 1 p.m.

After the deer was hit, it dashed out of some bushes, jumped over a barrier and then smashed head-on into another barrier. The sedated animal then laid down in some grass about five minutes later south of Lake Shore near Dowling Avenue, where it was placed in a net and taken away.

The animal will be released into the Rouge area.

Police closed Lake Shore between Jameson Avenue and Parkside Drive around 11 a.m. The area reopened around 1:30 p.m.

On May 16, Halton police shot a black bear to death in a Burlington park because it was making its way toward a residential area.

There have also been several incidents involving raccoons this spring, including some babies who fell through the ceiling of a drugstore near Yonge and Bloor streets on Thursday morning.

A CityNews LiveEye operator rescued another baby raccoon on Friday morning after it was spotted dangling from an overhead wire at Church and Dundas streets. Watch video of that here.
