Rainstorm causes damage across GTA

Heavy rain and strong winds in the GTA downed trees and power lines, caused flooding at Union Station and elsewhere and stranded boaters on Friday.

Four people were trapped on a sailboat anchored near Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club on Lake Ontario around 11 a.m. Friday.

Police attempted to rescue the group, but they chose to ride out the storm instead.

And around 9 a.m., a tree landed on a house on Christie Street, south of Davenport Road. Though it didn’t cause any major structural damage, it took down some power lines.

There are reports another tree came down an hour later near Oakwood and St. Clair avenues.

The wet weather is part of a low pressure system moving up from western Ohio, according to Environment Canada.

“June starts with a soaking rainfall,” the agency said in a special weather statement.

“This weather system is quite laden with moisture and will bring a significant rainfall across most of the region today into tonight.”

Most of southern Ontario — including the GTA — will likely get 20 to 30 millimetres of rain, but areas including the Golden Horseshoe, Barrie and Muskoka could get 30 to 50 millimetres.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also possible.
