Boy band One Direction signed up for movie: report

British boy band One Direction is following in the footsteps of Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber.

The band is set to film a movie next year, according to a report in UK newspaper The Sun. It will either be a scripted comedy or a tour documentary.

It wouldn’t be a bad financial move: Bieber’s tour documentary Never Say Never has taken in US$98 million worldwide since its February 2011 release.

A source told The Sun the One Direction movie “could even be a comedy caper in the style of old Monkees films…All options are open, though they’re unlikely to get cracking on shooting it until next year.”

Even though the band – Harry Styles, 18, Louis Tomlinson, 20, Liam Payne, 18, Zayn Malik, 19, and Niall Horan, 18 – haven’t begun to work on the movie, the source provided a release date.

He said the movie would likely be released on Nov. 8, 2013.

One Direction was put together by music mogul Simon Cowell on the UK version of reality singing show The X Factor in 2010. 1D, as they are known to their fans, were signed to Cowell’s label Syco Music in 2011.

One Direction performed twice in Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre last week.
