Ontario’s attorney-general has “no idea” how many people are currently out on bail in the province.
Christopher Husbands, the suspect in the fatal shooting at Toronto’s Eaton Centre on Saturday, was on bail and under house arrest at the time.
John Gerretsen told The Canadian Press on Wednesday that the government did not have the exact number of people out on bail, saying it is often a matter of local jurisdiction.
Gerretsen suggested it may be time to consider using ankle bracelets to monitor people on bail and house arrest.
The opposition said the government has a duty to know how many people are out on bail. Otherwise, the Progressive Conservatives said, those people can’t be monitored.
Husbands, 23, was charged Monday with first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder after surrendering to police.
He appeared in court that same day and was remanded in custody until a video appearance on Aug. 15.
