2 people charged after dog dies inside parked car

A man and a woman have been charged after a dog was found dead inside a parked vehicle Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene at the parking lot of Vaughan Mills mall, near Rutherford Road and Highway 400 around 2:10 p.m.

A passer-by spotted the unconscious dog, a one-and-a-half year old Weimaraner and Labrador cross, and alerted security, who called police. The dog died a short time later on scene.

Police tell CityNews the dog was left in the car for two hours while the owners shopped.

“You can just imagine what that temperature was and the conditions the dog was exposed to for that period of time. You can’t leave a dog in a car in this weather for five minutes…the dog suffered, and the dog died as a result of it so this is a tragedy all around,” said York Regional police Insp. Shelley Rogers.

The Peel Police Criminal Investigations Bureau tells CityNews the owners, a man 21, and woman, 20, both from Sudbury, have been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. They’re a couple, who refused to comment on the case when asked by CityNews.

Insp. Rogers added the owners attended Woofstock earlier in the day Sunday.
