The TTC celebrated a subway construction milestone Monday on the York Spadina line extension.
Mayor Rob Ford, TTC chair Karen Stintz, Vaughan MP Julian Fantino and York Region Chairman Bill Fisch attended a ceremony at the site of the Sheppard West station at Keele Street to celebrate the completion of the first 1.6 kilometres of twin tunnels.
The six-station, 8.6-kilometre extension is expected to open in 2015. The extended line will service York University and will run from Downsview station to the Vaughan corporate centre near Highway 7 and Millway Avenue.
“[The project] will generate approximately 20,000 direct and indirect jobs,” Ford said. “When finished, it will provide residents and businesses in northwest Toronto with faster access to the rest of the city … Toronto needs this subway connection and many more subways just like it.”

Three of the new stations — Finch West, Steeles West and Highway 407 — will offer nearly 3,000 parking spots for commuters.
The project has a budget of $2.6 billion. The federal government has promised $696 million and the province will kick in $870 million. Toronto and York Region are covering one-third of the cost with Toronto putting forward $526 million and York providing $352 million.
