Vigil calls for a gun-free Toronto

A vigil calling for a gun-free Toronto took place at Yonge-Dundas Square Monday evening

The 6:30 p.m. event, organized by Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam, is a response to the disturbing spate of recent gun violence that culminated with a fatal shooting inside the Eaton Centre on June 2. Seven people were injured in the shooting, including a 13-year-old boy and a pregnant woman who was trampled in the rush to evade bullets.

One man, Ahmed Hassan, 24, was killed. Christopher Husbands, 23, surrendered two days after the shooting and was charged with first-degree murder as well as six counts of attempted murder.

“We all cared about the single day shooting at Eaton Centre. What about everyday threat of gun-violence in distressed neighbourhoods?” Wong-Tam asked on Twitter.

Both concerned residents and community leaders spoke at the event, which was be emceed by CityNews anchor and reporter Roger Petersen.

There was also be a special musical performance by Kae Sun.

• Reverend Dr. John Joseph Mastandrea, minister at Metropolitan United Church
• Colleen Lavallée, resident, Alexandra Park public housing neighbourhood
• Priscilla Devilliers, victims’ advocate and mother of Nina who was killed with a legally-owned rifle in 1991
• Kimberley Belle, program participant, Catalyst Program at Scadding Court Community Centre
• Marlon Merraro, youth advocate, Alexandra Park
