Toronto students win police scholarships

Three students were honoured Wednesday with scholarships from the Toronto Police Service.

This year’s winners of the Youth Scholarship Award got $1,000 each for contributions to their communities and beyond.

One recipient helped build a school in Kenya and another helped set up an all-girls swim program to, in her words, “encourage women from restrictive religious groups to experience the joy of water and to teach them to swim.”

“I have been involved with the scholarship program since its inception,” said Const. Rob McDonald of 55 Division. “And I am very impressed with the quality of applications that we are receiving and I know our city has a very bright future. “

The ceremony took place at the Balmy Beach Club, in the city’s east end, at 1 p.m.

Students have received $30,000 from the fund, including this year’s scholarships.
