Group targets seniors with jewelry ruse: police

A group has been stealing from seniors by distracting them with a con involving jewelry, Toronto police say.

Since last month, the alleged thieves have been approaching elderly people and offering them jewelry they say belonged to a gravely ill or deceased family member.

The suspects then reportedly try to put a fake necklace or bracelet on the senior, removing the victim’s own jewelry in the process.

Police say the accused then escape before the victim realizes what has happened.

The alleged robberies have been happening typically between noon and 6 p.m., but investigators did not reveal where.

Anyone with information can call police at 416-808-1200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
