Beaches-area high school kids must pass breathalyzer to get into prom

Some east-end high school students will have to perform a breath-check before their prom, and not the kind rectified with a mint.

Students of the Beaches-area school Malvern Collegiate Institute, near Gerrard and Main streets, will be subject to a breathalyzer test before heading into the dance on Friday.

The prom is being held downtown at the King Edward Hotel on King Street.

“The message we want to send is we are not condoning students to be drinking at these events,” said the school’s principal Line Pinard.

Other schools have similar policies, including Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, at Danforth Avenue and Birchmount Road, and Humberside Collegiate Institute in the High Park area.

“It’s like they expect us to come in drunk,” said Malvern student Megan Phyper.
