Citytv wins best newscast at industry awards

Citytv took home a pair of prestigious awards at an industry bash Thursday night, winning best newscast and best live coverage at the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards.

“At Citytv, our motto is everywhere. And on that day, when the spring storm hit, we were everywhere,” CityNews at Six producer Amar Sodhi said.

Sodhi accepted the Bert Cannings Award for Best Newscast in a large market for a March 23, 2011 broadcast that focused on an unexpected snow fall.

“On behalf of all the dedicated camera guys, the reporters, the editors, the assignment editors, our directors who kept us all online, I’d like to say thank you,” he added.

The Gord Sinclair Award for Live Special Events was presented to Citytv for our 2012 New Year’s Eve bash.

“This is a great night for Citytv because not only have we been recognized as having the best newscast, we also have a major award for live coverage of a major event, which of course was the New Year’s Eve bash,” longtime CityNews anchor Gord Martineau said.

“It is undertaken by dozens and dozens of people who work very hard in the days leading up to the event and the days after in -15 C weather. This award, in particular, is for them. “

The RTDNA awards are presented by the Association of Electronic Journalists and were previously known as the RTNDA awards.
