Man shot dead after Miami face-eating attack wasn’t on bath salts: police

A Florida man who was shot dead by police after attacking another man and eating his face was not on bath salts, as was originally suspected, Miami-Dade police said Wednesday.

Lab tests showed Rudy Eugene, 31, had marijuana in his system.

There were no other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs in his system, or adulterants commonly mixed with street drugs, The Associated Press reported.

Eugene attacked Ronald Poppo, 65, on May 26. Surveillance video from a nearby building shows Eugene pulling Poppo from the shade, stripping and pummeling him before appearing to hunch over and then lie on top of him.

A witness described Eugene ripping at Poppo’s face with his mouth and growling at a Miami police officer, who shot and killed the attacker.

The attack lasted 18 minutes.

Poppo remains hospitalized.

The assault prompted Canada’s Conservative government to call for a ban on the street drug, including plans to regulate MDPV, a key ingredient in bath salts.
