From the male-stripper movie Magic Mike to the raunchy Ted, get the scoop on what’s playing in theatres this weekend.
Magic Mike
Short Story:
Largely based on star Channing Tatum’s pre-fame life as a Florida stripper, this Steven Soderbergh-directed film follows titular erotic dancer “Magic” Mike as he educates stripping neophyte Adam “The Kid” (Alex Pettyfer) in the art of clothes-doffing, woman-seducing and easy money-making (usually in small bills).
What They’re Saying:
“Magic Mike is so much better than it needs to be that it’s sick.” — Boston Globe
Good for Kids?
Last time we checked, there weren’t too many movies about men who take their clothes off for a living that were appropriate for children, so you’re probably going to want to leave the little ones behind for this one.
But with kick-butt reviews and a butt-baring ensemble of Hollywood beefcakes that includes Tatum, Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, True Blood’s Joe Manganiello (as a guy who’s named “Big Dick” Richie — wonder why?), and White Collar‘s Matt Bomer, this puppy has “ladies’ night” written all over it.
Ted
Short Story:
What would happen if as a kid you wished for your beloved teddy bear to come to life… and then he did… and then, when you grew up, he wouldn’t go away? That’s the premise of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature film debut, starring Mark Wahlberg as the the now-grown-up boy and Mila Kunis as his love interest, with MacFarlane providing the voice of the CGI bear BFF with a soft spot for beer, women and all things lewd.
What They’re Saying:
“Seth MacFarlane’s debut as a feature director hits all the sweet spots that irritate prudes. Ted is hysterically, gut-bustingly funny.” — Rolling Stone
Good for Kids?
Although it might look family-friendly at first glance, this film is a hard-R with a hefty helping of foul language and crude humour. So it’s a no for children, but a must for fans of raunchy comedy.
