History buffs share, peruse old photos online at Vintage Toronto

Vintage Toronto offers local history buffs a place to congregate online and peruse and share photographs from the city’s past, some dating back more than 150 years.

The Facebook group launched in January and its collection of images has garnered thousands of fans. (As of Monday, the page had just over 25,000 “likes”.)

“Basically, we’re just trying to get every picture we can find, and a lot of people are uploading pictures to the site, and just categorically put everything we have on Toronto in one area,” site spokesman Bruce Marshman told CityNews.

Photographs of old landmarks, or historic images of intersections are compared to photographs Marshman takes of the same location today.

“I just love old pictures,” Marshman said.

Amateur historians can search for more old photographs of Toronto on the City of Toronto Archives website. Click here for more information. You can also check out the city archives’ Flickr page here.
