City issues heat alert as hot & humid conditions to return to GTA this week

Hot and sticky weather is set to return to the GTA and other parts of southern Ontario this week with forecast temperatures in the low 30s, feeling closer to 40 C with the humidity.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown, issued a heat alert on Tuesday and is urging people to check in on elderly relatives and neighbours and other isolated adults. Residents without air conditioning can visit one of several cooling areas around the city. See a full list here.

Environment Canada also issued a special weather statement about the impending high humidity, but it was ended for Toronto around 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s forecast high is 30 C, with thunderstorms expected to roll through the GTA Tuesday night.

Things start to really heat up on Wednesday with a forecast high of 33 C, which will feel like 40 C with the humidity. Thursday’s forecast high is 32 C and the mercury is expected to hit 33 C on Friday.

An official heat wave is three consecutive days of temperatures of 32 C or higher.

Environment Canada says a humidex advisory currently in place for Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent will likely be extended to cover the GTA and most of southwestern Ontario on Wednesday.
