Toronto police are waiting for a search warrant Tuesday so they can begin dismantling an apparent drug lab in a Scarborough apartment building.
Police began their investigation into the illegal drug operation after receiving a tip on Monday afternoon from a resident of the building at 190 Borough Dr., near Ellesmere and McCowan roads, who reported a strange leak coming from a unit above.
As officers were about to enter the apartment, a suspect escaped by climbing down the building from the 30th floor — he dropped onto a balcony a floor below, then ran through another resident’s apartment and fled the scene.
No evacuation of the building was ordered because a haz-mat (hazardous materials) team determined the apparent drug lab doesn’t pose a threat to other tenants.
“We’re satisfied at this time that the building is safe, that what is inside is contained. There are no reactions happening,” Det. Roger Derochers of Toronto Police’s drug squad said Monday.
Health Canada has been notified.
A fire crew was posted at the scene overnight.
