Woman arrested, man at large after high-speed police chase

A woman has been charged and police continue to search for a man after a high-speed police chase and crash in North York on Wednesday morning.

The pursuit involved a stolen van and started around 5 a.m. at Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue. The van’s owner apparently left the keys in the vehicle while stepping out to use a bank machine.

During the chase, which apparently reached speeds in excess of 130 km/h, the stolen van hit two cars near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue. That’s when a man jumped out of the van, but the female driver continued on at a high speed on Keele up to Toro Road, near Finch Avenue West, where she stopped the van and was arrested around 5 a.m.

The 36-year-old has since been charged with theft under $5,000, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, failing to comply with probation, dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Officers apparently called off the chase after the man jumped out, and the van came to a stop shortly after.

Police are still searching for the outstanding suspect, who is a black man last seen wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans.
