Oakville man murdered estranged wife: police

Two separate investigations into an Oakville man who was shot to death by police earlier this year have now been closed.

The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), concluded that the two officers who shot Kyle Newman to death in an Oakville parking lot were justified in their actions.

Halton police, meanwhile, have also closed the case, concluding Newman stabbed his estranged wife to death before he was killed by police.

Newman was gunned down by officers on Jan. 12 in the parking lot of a Halton Regional Police station at 95 Oak Walk Dr. around the same time police had discovered his estranged wife Katherine had been stabbed to death in her Oakville townhome on Treetop Terrace.

“In my view, both subject officers were justified in the use of lethal force leading to Mr. Newman’s death in these circumstances… they could reasonably conclude that he represented an imminent threat of death or grievous bodily harm,”  SIU director Ian Scott said in a statement.

When the SIU probe concluded, Halton detectives continued the investigation into Katherine Newman’s death and analyzed evidence collected during the SIU probe, as well as other evidence gathered by homicide detectives.

Halton police concluded Kyle Newman was responsible for his estranged wife’s death.

“The circumstances surrounding Katherine and Kyle’s deaths greatly affected our community. The receipt and examination of additional evidence has provided confirmation of the circumstances surrounding Katherine’s death,” Halton chief Bob Percy said in a statement. “This was a tragic situation that touched many lives. Hopefully the completion of the investigation will bring a measure of closure. Our thoughts remain with their families.”
