Elderly Oakville man found safe after daylong search

An elderly man with dementia was found safe nearly 24 hours after he went missing in Oakville.

Halton police launched an all-out search for 83-year-old Frank Garger who disappeared Tuesday afternoon in south Oakville, near Rebecca and Kerr streets, north of Lakeshore Road.

There was great concern for his well-being because of his dementia and other medical conditions.

He was found near Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Police said he appeared to be in good health and walked to the hospital on his own.

The Halton canine and marine units participated in the search. Officers combed fields, parks, the waterfront and a nearby creek. Local residents had been asked to check their backyards for any signs of Garger.

Police released video of Garger entering his apartment building on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Toronto police are also looking for a missing elderly man who was last seen near Kingston Road and Birchmount Avenue.

Ronald Wittman, 69, has been missing since June 19.

He’s described as:

  • White
  • Five feet, 10 inches
  • 140 pounds
  • Unshaven, balding with grey-brown hair

He was last seen wearing thick-rimmed broken glasses, a dark-blue long-sleeved shirt, dark khaki pants, and black Oxford-style shoes.

Call police at (416) 808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS if you spot him.

Three elderly people were found safe Tuesday after they were reported missing in Toronto.
