Philip Seymour Hoffman joins ‘The Hunger Games’

Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has joined the cast of The Hunger Games.

He’ll take on the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, the game-maker who replaces Seneca Crane in Catching Fire.

Filming for Catching Fire, the second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy, is set to begin in September and the movie will be released in November 2013. It was recently announced that Mockingjay, the third and final book, will be split into two movies, the first of which will be released in 2015.

The movies are based on the bestselling novels by Suzanne Collins, and tell the story of a futuristic dystopia where young citizens from neighbouring districts face off against each other in a televised battle to the death.

Hoffman will join Jena Malone, who was recently cast as Johanna Mason, a tribute from District 7.

Catching Fire
follows Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, as tributes who have already competed in the games and must return to the battle field.

Casting for Finnick Odair, a tribute from District 4 who plays a key role in Catching Fire, has not yet been decided.

Hoffman won the best-actor Academy Award for his performance as the title character in Capote. He has also appeared in Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Moneyball.
