Lead singer of Florence and The Machine loses voice; concerts cancelled

British band Florence and The Machine called off two European concerts because lead singer, Florence Welch, has lost her voice and been told not to perform to avoid permanent damage.

Welch apologized to fans on her Twitter account Wednesday, saying “I’ve sustained a vocal injury and been told I cannot sing for a week, seriously I felt something snap, it was very frightening.”

The band was due to play at the Benicassim festival in Spain on Thursday and at the Optimus Alive event in Portugal over the weekend.

The band plays Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre on Aug. 2.

Welch fronts the Grammy-nominated seven-piece band, which released its latest album, Ceremonials, last year.
