Woman wakes to find intruder in her home near York U campus

A woman awoke Thursday morning to find an intruder in her home near the York University campus.

Police were called to a home on Assiniboine Road, around the southern edge of the campus, around 5 a.m. after a woman reported the break-in.

She apparently woke up to find a man on his hands and knees near her bed. The intruder reportedly tried to steal a laptop and police say he could have been planning a sexual assault.

“At this point it’s being investigated as a break and enter, with the potential of a sex offender,” said Const. Wendy Drummond.

The intruder fled when the woman screamed. Police still aren’t sure how he gained access, but are looking over surveillance video.

The suspect is described as black, in his late teens, five feet, eight inches tall with a thin build and short, stubby dreadlocks.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (416) 808-3104 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.

Meanwhile, security on the campus has been heightened after a string of alleged sexual assaults last week. A 20-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday.
