A fire that started in a back-porch barbecue has completely destroyed a million-dollar Pickering home, Peel police tell CityNews.
The fire began on Front Street near Liverpool Road around 7:45 p.m. and by 11 p.m., crews were still on the scene dousing the flames.
A house-sitter was the only person home at the time, Pickering Fire Services spokesperson Steve Fowlds said. The owner of the home was away on a business conference.
The 21-year-old sitter was reportedly looking after the home for his father’s boss.
“It was terrible. It was just engulfed in flames. The whole house was just demolished,” a neighbour said.
“You could hear the windows blowing out from the intensity.”
No one was injured. The fire caused about $1 million in damages.
Police are investigating.
