Crews extinguish grass fire near Barrie

Firefighters have extinguished an enormous grass fire southwest of Barrie.

Between 200 to 300 acres were on fire in Adjala Tosorontio.

“When we first arrived, the fire was out of control,” Adjala-Tosorontio Fire Chief Wayne McIsaac told CityNews.

“It’s now under control.”

No serious injuries were reported, but some firefighters were dealing with heat exhaustion.

Several homes were evacuated. Residents have now been allowed back.

The blaze began around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and was out by 9:30 p.m.

The Ministry of Natural Resources was prepared to send a water bomber, an airplane that can deliver up to 6,130 litres of water (1,350 gallons), to assist with the fire, but it wasn’t needed.

The Mono-Adjala Townline, as well as Concessions 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Adjala-Tosorontio between Highway 9 and the 5th Sideroad, were closed to traffic, Ontario Provincial Police said.

It’s not yet known how the fire started.
