Rupert Murdoch resigns from News Corp boards: BBC

Rupert Murdoch has resigned from a number of News Corp boards, the BBC reported Saturday, citing a company spokesperson.

Murdoch, 81, quit positions in Britain and the United Sates on Friday, including directorships at NI Group Ltd, NewsCorp Investments and Times Newspaper Holdings.

According to the BBC, News Corp will be divided into two firms, one looking after newspaper and book publishing and the other concentrating on TV and film.

The company described the news as a “corporate housecleaning exercise” linked to the split.

Murdoch is expected to chair both businesses but to be chief executive only of the TV and film side.

Earlier this year, James Murdoch, the younger son of Rupert, stepped down as executive chairman of News International following a massive phone-hacking scandal.

The younger Murdoch remained deputy chief operating officer of News Corp.

James Murdoch, once seen as heir apparent for the top job, has been under pressure in Britain since last summer following the phone-hacking scandal that erupted at the unit he oversaw.

The revelations of sustained criminality prompted an influential parliamentary committee in May to describe Rupert Murdoch as unfit to run a major company.
