Scarborough residents fuming over flooded basements

Scarborough residents rallied over their flooded basements on Sunday night, demanding answers after intense rains last week ruined their belongings.

“It’s the city’s fault. It’s not like we had anything to do with it,” resident Sam Fortomaris said at a Scarborough church.

“It’s not as if I left a window open or it leached in through a crack in my floor. This came in through the sewers outside.”

Nearly 90 millimetres of rain fell in two hours in Scarborough alone during the thunderstorm that caused problems throughout the GTA last week.

Mayor Rob Ford and Scarborough councillors Gary Crawford and Michelle Berardinetti toured the neighbourhood after the flood, but residents say more needs to be done.

“The city’s sewer water has completely destroyed everything I own,” said Fortomaris, who organized Sunday’s meeting.

“The least they could do is step forward and pay the deductible.”

That may prove difficult, Crawford said at the meeting.

“We have to look at and see where the city’s responsibility…over the next couple of weeks and months.”
