What to look for in a high-quality energy drink

They come in amazing bright colours and have flashy labels, but fitness expert Bruce Krahn advises avoiding using sugary energy drinks to hydrate during a workout or enhance your performance at the gym.

Chocolate milk has also recently been touted by some as a good post-workout drink — also not a good idea, Krahn says.

“Those sugar-laden beverages, things that have high-fructose corn syrup … that’s a bad choice,” he said.

“The same with things like chocolate milk and such, full of lactose, things that increase mucus — they’re not the greatest thing for performance.”

Krahn stopped by Breakfast Television Thursday to offer some suggestions on how to put together the best beverage to consume before and during your workout, drinks that include caffeine. Coconut water is another good option.
